Do You Have a Healthy Gut?

Do You Have a Healthy Gut?

Gut health refers to the function and balance of the gastrointestinal tract. Ideally, organs all work together to allow us to eat and digest food without discomfort.

How likely is it that you have perfect gut health? Is there anything you immediately think of that triggers any pain or discomfort? For some it’s dairy, for some nuts and seeds - why is it so important for us to have a healthy gut?

A healthy gut contributes to a strong immune system, improved mood, healthy sleep, and effective digestion. It’s even believed gut health can help prevent some cancers and autoimmune diseases.

Why don’t we really talk about this? In my experience, especially in the fitness industry, people confuse “gut health” with “eating healthy”. While they are related, it goes much deeper. Someone who eats healthy can still experience gut problems. Here are signs to look for that might mean something’s not right:

  1. Upset stomach - if you experience gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation and/or heartburn a LOT, this is not normal.
  2. Unintentional weight changes - gaining or losing weight without making changes to your exercise or diet routine may be a sign of an unhealthy gut.
  3. Constant Fatigue - serotonin is produced in the gut, so sleep disturbances can be linked to gut health
  4. Skin irritation - some skin conditions can be related to an unhealthy gut.
  5. Food intolerances - our bodies digest foods differently, so what one person may be able to eat a lot of, you can’t have without getting an upset stomach. Pay attention to how you feel when you eat certain foods and start to keep a list of what makes you not feel well. Talk to your doctor if something starts to worry you.

We know how to contribute to our physical health, our mental health - so we should involve gut health in the conversation. After all, everything is connected.
